Jean Shinoda Bolen: Goddesses in Everywoman

The Jungian perspective has made me aware that women are influenced by powerful inner forces, or archetypes, which can be personified by Greek goddesses. And the feminist perspective has given me an understanding of how outer forces, or stereotypes — the roles to which society expects women to conform — reinforce some goddess patterns and repress others. As a result, I see every woman as a “woman-in-between”: acted on from within by goddess archetypes and from without by cultural stereotypes.

Nepaprastai susižavėjau šia knyga ir kai pasakojau artimiesiems apie ją, susilaukiau skepsio: na, tai ar jau atradai deivę savyje? Ar čia kažkas panašaus į Pabarčiūtę? Ne, pavadinimas atrodo klaidinantis, ir dėl jo netgi nesinorėjo iš pradžių imti šio kūrinio, bet tai tikrai nėra panašu į Pabarčiūtę, tai nėra motyvacinė knyga apie tai, kaip reikia visiems dalinti meilę ir būti savo gyvenimo kūrėja. Goddesses in Everywoman – psichologinė (su feminizmo prieskoniu) knyga apie archetipus, kurie neišvengiamai veikia kiekvieno mūsų elgesį ir savijautą, o kaip juos pavadinsi – jau susitarimo reikalas. Autorė pasirinko antikos mitologiją ir aiškina moters psichologiją per septynių deivių portretus ir mitus.

If a woman is one-in-herself, she will be motivated by a need to follow her own inner values, to do what has meaning or fulfills herself, apart from what other people think.
Psychologically, the virgin goddess is that part of a woman that has not been worked on, either by the collective (masculine-determined) social and cultural expectations of what a woman should be, or by an individual male’s judgment of her. The virgin goddess aspect is a pure essence of who the woman is and of what she values. It remains untarnished and uncontaminated because she does not reveal it, because she keeps it sacred and inviolate, or because she expresses it without modification to meet male standards.

Man šis kūrinys labiausiai patiko dėl to, kad atskleidžia moterų tipų įvairovę – kai žiniasklaida, knygos, filmai ir pati visuomenė aiškina, kokia turėtų būti tobula moteris, kaip elgtis ir kaip jaustis, čia pasakojama apie tai, kokios būna moterys, ir tada supranti, kad viskas su Tavim gerai, net jei Tu nenori būti nei princese, nei karjeriste, nei motina iš didžiosios M. Nežinau, čia matyt kažkokios mano vidinės žaizdos buvo paliestos (ir užgydytos), nes vos ne verkti iš palengvėjimo norėjosi, kai skaičiau apie kai kurias deives ir jų aspektus beigi dar ir paaiškinimus, kokia pagal mitą buvo jų vaikystė, kaip su jomis elgėsi tėvai ir kas iš to gavosi.

With Hestia as an inner presence, a woman is not “attached” to people, outcomes, possessions, prestige, or power. She feels whole as she is. Her ego isn’t on the line. Because her identity isn’t important, it is not tied to external circumstance. Thus she does not become elated or devastated by whatever happens.

Hestia is an archetype of inner centeredness. She is “the still point” that gives meaning to activity, the inner reference point that allows a woman to be grounded in the midst of outer chaos, disorder, or ordinary, everyday bustle. With Hestia in her personality, a woman’s life has meaning.

She feels herself to be like a turtle without a shell, expected to compete in a rat race. By nature, Hestia is not a joiner or a social climber, isn’t moved by political causes and lacks ambition. She isn’t out in the world trying to put her mark on it, and doesn’t care to be. Thus she is easily overlooked and devalued by achievers, do-gooders, and social arbiters, who measure people by tangible standards and find her lacking.
